The Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize honours the memory of Shakti Bhatt. I knew her as a friend and as an inspired editor and writer. The only prize of its kind in India, it awards a sum of one lakh to the best first book each year.
This year the prize goes to Samanth Subramanian for Following Fish.
It was selected from a short list that included Homeboy by HM Naqvi, House on the Mall Road by Mohyna Srinivasan, Songs of Blood and Sword, A Daughter's Memoir by Fatima Bhutto, The Wish Maker by Ali Sethi and Delhi Calm by Vishwajyoti Ghosh. The judges - playwright Mahesh Dattani, writer and surgeon Kalpana Swaminathan and writer Ruchir Joshi - were unanimous in their selection of Following Fish.
The prize ceremony is open to the public. Please do come. For more information go here.
